Headaches and Migraines
Headaches and migraines can be incredibly debilitating ranging from a wide array of symptoms. To some these symptoms may present with a dull pain, sharp pain, throbbing pain and even lead to more severe manifestations such as nausea. However they may present in a given individual, they all interfere with normal day-to-day life.

For some people, these headaches are quite frequent, while others they are not. No matter how often we are feeling the given symptoms, this is a way our body is trying to tell us something is wrong. These headaches can stem from multiple etiologies -such as dehydration, vascular, cervicogenic, or some other trigger such as food.
Symptoms often do not stop in the head region and are frequently associated with muscle tension in the neck and suboccipital triangle. Spending an increased amount of time in a fixed posture, especially sedentary, can increase joint irritation and muscle tension found with headaches.
Chiropractic offers a non-invasive, drug free alternative to treatment for headaches and migraines through the chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractors deliver a gentle manipulation known as a chiropractic adjustment that acts to reduce joint restrictions and misalignments, reducing inflammation, increasing joint mobility, and enhancing nervous system function. By doing so, your body will be in a position to better manage and regulate these undesired headaches.
Sciatica
Sciatica is the result of the notorious sciatic nerve which often starts as low back pain that later begins to radiate down the posterior thigh all the way to the foot. This large nerve originates in the lower back from the L4 and L5 nerve roots. Sprained ligaments, strained muscles, herniated discs, and misaligned joints in the lumbar spine can all compress this nerve, leading to sciatica.

Another frequent area of compression is the piriformis muscle. This external rotator of the leg is commonly tight on most people. The sciatic nerve may pass over this muscle, under this muscle, or even directly through this muscle in some people. In any of these instances, the sciatic nerve may be compressed when this muscle is overly tight. This then leads to sciatica pain and is known as ‘piriformis syndrome.’ At Collins Chiropractic Center not only will the possible misalignments be addressed, but so will the piriformis if found to be a causative agent.
Chiropractic adjustments are an effective treatment for sciatica that aid to reduce pain, decrease inflammation, and improve the range of motion in a patient.
Low Back Pain
Low back pain seems to get a hold of most of us at some point. Whether it’s pain that brings you to your knees or a low-level ache that is just enough to annoy you, we can help.

Composed of 5 lumbar vertebrae, the sacrum and two innominate bones, the “low back” has a lot of moving parts. Misalignment anywhere here can lead to a cascade of events that result in disrupted movement patterns and ultimately pain. Subluxation, disc degeneration, and disc herniations are common etiologies of pain in and from this region.
The nerves that originate in the low back extend to digestive organs, reproductive organs, as well as down the legs and into the feet. This is to say that not only can nerve compression here result in low back pain, but also numerous dysfunctions in digestion and the lower extremities. Nerve roots in the low back also come together to create the sciatic nerve. Compression of any of these nerve roots, as well as the sciatic nerve itself, can result in debilitating sciatica.
Low back pain can benefit from chiropractic adjustments via restoration of motion and decreasing inflammation, allowing proper function to be reinstated and pain to decrease.
Neck Pain
Neck pain is frequently treated in our chiropractic office. This is becoming more common with the rise of technology. Hours spent hunched over, working on a computer puts an increased amount of tension on our cervical spine. Not only is this not advantageous for the alignment of our cervical spine, but it also creates a muscular imbalance in the muscles that attach to our neck -most commonly our trapezius muscles.

Osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease, is another common etiology of neck pain. All of us are fighting gravity inescapably on a daily basis that will promote disc degeneration over time. The key here is to keep movement in the spine to slow down this degeneration and aid in a decreased pain level associated with it.
Due to muscle tension, arthritis, poor posture, torticollis, or any other of the wide array of causes, neck pain can be battled successfully with chiropractic care. By administering a chiropractic adjustment, motion is reintroduced to the cervical spine and proper biomechanics restored. Furthermore, inflammation is reduced to allow correct function in the neck as a whole -alleviating neck pain.
TMJ Dysfunction
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to your skull in a joint formed like a hinge. Dysfunction here can cause all sorts of problems such as jaw pain, popping and clicking, difficulty eating/chewing, and feeling like your jaw is getting locked in an open or closed position.

This pain can often arise from a subluxation, or misalignment, of the TMJ itself and become quite debilitating in day-to-day life. Chiropractic care can work to find how the jaw may be misaligned and adjust the joint to restore proper alignment and function.
There is often a muscular component associated with TMJ dysfunction that disallows the joint from healing on its own if not addressed. At Collins Chiropractic, we will work with you to realign the temporomandibular joint and to release the tight musculature surrounding the joint that are keeping it misaligned.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) comes from compression of the median nerve in the wrist and forearm. This can lead to pain in the hand as well as decreased grip strength and even muscle atrophy in the hand in some severe cases. Some patients also often experience some numbness/tingling into the palm of the hand.

There are 8 small bones in each wrist, and each of these bones articulates with the bones immediately around it. Just as any other joint in our body, these bones can misalign and cause dysfunction as described in the symptoms stated above. Each of these small joints can be adjusted through gentle chiropractic manipulation.
With the growth of technology in today’s day and age, people spend more time at a computer than ever. Not only for surfing the web, but many careers nowadays require one to spend extended periods of time typing on a keyboard. This can often be a common cause for carpal tunnel syndrome. Though there are 8 small bones in the wrist, carpal tunnel often arises with a prolonged misalignment of the lunate subluxating anteriorly and putting pressure on the small pathway known as the carpal tunnel -and thus the median nerve.
Chiropractic adjustments of the wrist and surrounding joints can act to take pressure off this nerve, restoring nerve function. Furthermore, these adjustments will work to increase range of motion and decrease inflammation, decreasing the symptoms of CTS.
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
The thoracic outlet refers to a space between the clavicle and the first rib that serves as a narrow passageway for some nerves and blood vessels extending down the arm. Compression of these nerves and blood vessels will often lead to coldness, weakness, numbness and tingling into the hands and fingers. Symptoms such as pain in the shoulder and neck can also arise due to compression here. This is known as Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS).

TOS can be caused by trauma, repetitive injuries, pregnancy, having an extra rib, tight musculature or subluxation. TOS rarely requires surgery and can often be treated conservatively via chiropractic care with success.
Chiropractic care will work to correct subluxations and adhesions as well as address musculature imbalance by relaxing tight muscles and strengthening weak muscles. Through this, with proper spinal and joint alignment and proper muscle balance, pressure will be taken off the nerves and blood vessels traveling through this narrow passageway. With this interference decreased, the symptoms will be eliminated and function restored.
